Officers involved with Rajiv Gandhi's security recall the phase soon after Indira Gandhi's death when despite polite warnings from the security men, the youthful Prime-Minister Rajiv Gandhi loved to drive at high speeds or sometimes deliberately hood-wink his own security men to enjoy moments of solitude without anyone snooping in on his movements.
It is a different story though that one fateful day on 21 May 1991 at Sriperumdur, near Channai he was killed by Dhannu- the human bomb, posing as a normal visitor.
Much to securitymen's consternation -- Rahul Gandhi does not seem to have learnt a lesson from his father's death and has the habit of avoiding the security cordon public meetings and playing hide and seek with the security men on his numerous yatras outside Delhi.
This is the cause of many a sleepless nights for his personal security officers (PSOs) and those responsible for his proximate security.
The seriousness of the matter can be judged from the fact that the Special Protection Group (SPG), which forms the inner security cordon of the MP has formally approached the Union Home Ministry (MHA), highlighting the lacunae in Rahul Gandhi's security.
According to highly placed sources in the MHA, the SPG has observed glaring inadequacies in communications, access control, crowd control, sanitization of the entrance and exits and security of the moving cavalcade.
In its detailed report, the SPG is understood to have outlined various lapses in the security drill followed during Rahul Gandhi's several visits during the recent past. From inadequate or non-functional door-frame metal detector (DFMD) to breach in the security cordon by the party functionaries to improper barricading or crowd control at the place of meeting, stay or en-route - the SPG does not seem to be in a mood to take any chances.
